I took these pictures of Stephanie, Alex, and two-and-a-half-year-old Simone at Granville Island in the sun on Sunday morning. Stephanie is my good friend Erica’s older sister, and now she is my friend too. Stephanie, Alex and their daughter Simone are a fun-loving, affectionate, and beautiful family. They were so relaxed about this shoot, that I knew from the first five minutes we were going to have fun, especially when they pulled out heart-shaped sunglasses for Simone. I knew about sweet Simone before almost anyone else did, when three years ago, I bumped in to Steph in Shopper’s Drug Mart while she was buying her pregnancy test. I was so oblivious to the situation that she easily could have gotten away with it. However, Steph admitted bashfully and honestly what she was doing. I love that these beautiful traits of hers came through in the photos…what you see is what you get. Watching Alex interact with his daughter was also a privilege to observe. It actually brought a lump in my throat a couple of times. His gentle touch, comfort after a fall, sense of humor, and calm response to Simone brought her running in to his arms over and over again.
Steph and I shared our first pregnancies together and the joys of loving a first-born with walks at kits beach, and eventually we shared the heartaches of making decisions about working vs. staying home. Steph returned to practice law, while I stayed home, and then we continued to share our independent struggles and envy the benefits of the other’s situation from time to time. Part of the fun for me of taking these photos, was getting to catch up with these guys in between shots. It was a great morning!
